Emily Prentiss

Backstory

Emily was born on October 12, 1972 in Washington DC. Daughter of diplomats, Elizabeth and Edward, reason why she traveled a lot when she was a child, living in several Middle Eastern countries and Europe.

Emily barely lived in the US as a kid, her mother’s family lived in France and was the place Elizabeth chose to raise her daughter along with her husband, Edward. However due to their respective careers, they moved several times, being Europe and Middle Eastern countries their main destiny.

Soon enough, politics began to control their lives. Diplomacy and the good appearance was the most important fact in the Prentiss’ household. Meanwhile, Emily was totally unaware of this change due to her short life and she was simply used to being around nannies and personal tutors, being raised around adults, which made her be really mature for her age.

Her father, Edward, betrayed his wife, having an affair with the media liason of his party. When Elizabeth found out, she didn’t get the divorce due to the others’ opinions, but their marriage was more than broken. Emily noticed the estrangement among her parents, especially her father’s sudden absence.
The sorrow Emily felt for his parents was totally forgotten when she visited her grandfather, Anthony, who lived in the French Alps.

This stage of her life started negatively. Her parents eventually got divorced, which separated her more from her father and her grandfather died.
Both father figures vanishing from her life, made possible that her bodyguard, Patrick, and she developed such a strong relationship, the two of them spending long nights playing chess and reading books.


Once again, she and her mother had to move again due to a new posting. In Italy, she felt totally alone, even though she met two boys, Matthew Benton and John Cooley, and became friends with. However, she was the new kid in the block for literally everyone, and all she ever desired was their acceptance. Despite she had always been a good child, she began to rebel by underaged smoking, drinking and having sex. Prentiss was not conscious she was playing with fire until she realised she had fallen pregnant by an older and unknown Italian dude at the age of 15, eventually deciding to get an abortion with Matthew’s help. The psychological and physical damage that it gave her was only bearable if she did drugs with her friend, and first real love she had, Matthew.

Prentiss is a Yale's alma mater, where she earned her B.A. in Criminal Justice. Starting here a romance with a woman, Fiona Duncan, whose father worked with the Ambassador. Afterwards she was recruited by the CIA - many of her CIA missions are classified and cannot be disclosed in this backstory. Also, worked for Interpol as spy, Prague being one of her first cases.

In early, 2004, on a task force profiling terrorists; while undercover, she met Doyle and became his lover. Lauren fell in love with him truly, even proposing to him to leave that life and run away, however his negative caused her betrayal, which led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment,in a North Korean prison.
Emily took care of Declan, managing her good friend Tom could adopt him and she could be around his life.

In her return to DC, she found out her father was ill and would die in a few months, somehow, she chose to be with Declan, after all Edward had not been around in the most important years of her life so she did not feel as she owed him anything.
As a favor, Clyde sent a report to the BAU, recommending Prentiss to replace the last agent gone.
